About Scott Douglas Martell

What’s your favourite country (not counting your own)?

Generally, the one where I’m living. When in Ethiopia, I loved the people, ancient history, old Orthodox churches, blown-top volcanoes, sugar cane and teff fields, doro wat, cattle drives on the highways.

Now in Vietnam, I love the tropical heat, brilliant green rice paddies, water buffaloes, pho, coastal reefs, , smell of incense, old Catholic churches, and ducks crossing the highways.

What’s your most memorable real-life travel experience?

Too many—I could write a book! Yesterday, we rode our motorbikes to Binh Son, a mountainous coastal area filled with small towns and farms. Driving through one small hillside town, the road narrowed to the width of a king-sized bed, winding through two-three story buildings. Around a bend, tarps overhung the entire road and we were puttering through an outdoor market. Later, at an outdoor restaurant hanging on a cliff above the South China Sea, we ate an American football-sized fish just plucked from the multi-hued blue waters. Nice day. Yesterday.

If you could describe yourself in three words, what would they be?

Compassionate, gentle, inquisitive?

About Your Writing

What genre do you write?

Suspense and spiritual non-fiction.

What inspired you to start writing?

Love of books since I crawled my way out of the womb.

Have you travelled overseas (or to an exotic location in your country) to research a book?

Inspired to write when serving in Ethiopia.

What would you like readers to say about your books?

He obviously loves God and cares about other people.

What’s your favourite part of the writing process? What’s your least favourite?

Creating,  …Marketing,

About Writing Christian Fiction

Why do you choose to write Christian fiction with an international setting?

As a servant of God, I’ve been exposed to life in many cultures, with a variety of challenges. For whatever reason, I’ve found people in Africa and Asia are more ravenous for God compared to more developed countries. There’s a fire overseas that needs to come back to our ‘home’ countries.

Who are three of your favourite Christian authors?

Frank Peretti (probably the first Christian-themed books I read); Jeanette Windle (just finished Congo—powerful); Terri Blackstock (Currently reading the final book of her “If I Run” series).  …

Do you think Christian fiction can cross over into the general market?

It must be our goal, for isn’t that the main point?
